5 Hard Truths About Mindset

When you think of sports performance, you probably think of the physical aspects, such as a person’s strength and skills.

You’re in awe of their output. But, behind every successful performance is an equally powerful force – their mindset.

While their physical attributes contribute to their success, their mindset gives them the edge to compete and win.

There’s always room for improvement regarding mindset, and growth isn’t linear.

Part of your evolution is accepting hard truths to reach your peak performance.

5 Hard Truths About Mindset

Your comfort zone is keeping you stagnant.

One of the biggest enemies of growth is our comfort zones. They keep us small and prevent us from trying new things. When we embrace discomfort, we allow ourselves to grow and evolve.

As the quote says, “Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear.”

    Your thoughts shape your reality.

Your thoughts impact the perception of the world and how you interact with it. Remember, “Like attracts like.” When you think negatively, you see things through a negative lens. When you change your thoughts, you can change your life.

      Your excuses are roadblocks.

Your excuses are like adding weight to a barbell. After a while, it becomes so heavy you can’t lift it. The same thing happens when you make excuses. Every excuse holds you back from your true potential. Your self-awareness and accountability will empower you to move beyond your excuses.

        Success requires sacrifice.

True success doesn’t come from the easy road. It’s forged in failure—when you get knocked down and immediately get back up.

Behind every “overnight success” is years of hard work, sacrifice, and relentless persistence toward a goal.

          You control your happiness.

It’s easy to shift responsibility for your happiness to other people and external factors.

But when you do that, you’re setting yourself up for the opposite—unhappiness.

Your happiness is your responsibility. Control your thoughts to influence your actions and positively improve your outcomes.

Mindset is more than just a popular buzzword. It’s the foundation of your life.

The hard truths I discussed in this blog are probably not easy to accept. But to reach your full potential as an athlete, you need to accept them.

Setbacks will happen, you’ll fail, you’ll win—all these things will happen.

Understanding the highs and lows will empower you to stay the course and embrace the journey.

Give these five truths another read, think about them, and use them as fuel to refine your mental game.

I’ll leave you with this quote from Laird Hamilton that mirrors the message I shared today of how your mindset is the difference maker:

“Make sure your worst enemy doesn’t live between your own two ears.”
