Rinse & Repeat: Building a Positive Routine

A routine is performed as part of a regular procedure rather than for a special occasion.

When you have a routine, it becomes second nature and helps form positive habits in your life and athletic performance.

Positive habits create a positive life, and a positive life attracts successful performance.

You need to create positive routines to maximize your success in life and sports.

Why are routines important for athletes?

Here are three reasons why routines are important:

  1. They train your mind and body to react the same way.
  2. They create consistency, familiarity, predictability, control, and comfort.
  3. They’re unique to the individual. What works for you might not work for someone else. You control your life and the routines and habits you create.

When should you use your routine?

I always suggest building yours into your training, practices, and your pre-game preparation.

Your routines should include everything you need to prepare yourself to perform at your best.

How do you make the most of a routine?

A healthy mindset is the foundational piece to build your routine.

From there, make sure it includes a mental warm-up (Ex: positive self-talk, mental imagery, mantra) to get you mentally ready to perform at your best.
